In response to the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, the United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) International Union Women’s Network released the following statement:
“Friday’s Supreme Court decision to overturn Roe v. Wade wiped out a fundamental constitutional protection for all American women. After nearly 50 years of established precedent, the Supreme Court decided to strip away one of the most fundamental rights a woman, or any person, can have – agency over their own body, health, safety, and freedom.
“The UFCW Women’s Network has always advocated for women’s rights, whether it be in the workplace or their communities. We have an obligation to our members – many of whom are women – to ensure that they have access to health care, regardless of which state they live in or their religious beliefs. We need to protect the health of our members and ensure they have the care they need.
“It has long been a foundational standard of labor unions that working people everywhere are provided quality health care coverage that is accessible, affordable, and free of inequalities or barriers to access.
“Health care is a human right regardless of gender, race, ethnicity, geography, income, ability, sexual orientation, immigration status and/or gender identity.
“Approximately, 1 in 4 women have had an abortion. This decision will not stop women from making their own deeply personal medical decisions, but rather will eliminate safe access to health care for many and ultimately set a dangerous precedent that endangers future rights and liberties of all Americans.
“The UFCW Women’s Network refuses to turn back the clock and will continue fighting for our members’ rights.”
We encourage all to participate in events to protest this decision.
